Raising Public Awareness on ASEAN Community through Statistics
How to make Statistics understandable, and meaningful to the people – that is the key objective of the “Training on Statistical Data Dissemination”, which is scheduled to take place 29-31 July 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
And it will be professionals teaching each other. Statisticians will learn to communicate their numbers in media style reports, while the journalists will learn how to read and gain knowledge on basic statistics. The journalists and statisticians will work together and learn from each other to prepare a press release or snapshot publication. This training also aims to raise public awareness on ASEAN Community through statistics.
The 4 pilot countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Viet Nam) and the ASEANstats will choose a topic from the 2012 ASEAN Community Progress Monitoring System (ACPMS) Report for their press release. The press release will be issued at the same time that the ACPMS Report is circulated in mid-September 2013.
Part of the pilot project on Community Mission-Based Model on Data Dissemination, the training aims to make statistics available and accessible to the ASEAN Community through the joint efforts of the national statistical systems and the ASEANstats in all stages of the statistical process—starting from planning, processing, analysis, data sharing, dissemination and communication.
Training coaches are experts in the fields of statistics and dissemination such as Mr. Daniel Byk for Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Mr. Richard Burgess of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Organised by the Department of Statistics (DOS) Malaysia and assisted by the ASEANstats, this training is a follow-up to the First Training which was hosted by the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) Indonesia in May and participated by four Member States (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Viet Nam) and the ASEANstats. These trainings on Community Mission-Based Model on Data Dissemination are supported by the 'Capacity Building for the ASEAN Secretariat' project, GIZ, and ABS.
