ASEAN Women's Circle Announces New Executive Board 2014-2015
JAKARTA, 28 February 2014 - The new Executive Board of ASEAN Women's Circle (AWC) begins its term following a formal handover and inauguration ceremony held today at the ASEAN Secretariat. Mme. Sabai Win (spouse of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to ASEAN) succeeds Mme. Datin Rusnah Ismail (spouse of the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to ASEAN) as the new President of AWC.
The handover and the inauguration ceremony was graced by the Chief Patron, Mme. Sranya Natalegawa, spouse of the Foreign Minister of Republic of Indonesia; Mme. Veronica Basuki Cahaya Purnama, spouse of the Vice Governor of Jakarta; the Permanent Representatives to ASEAN; and members of AWC. During the event, AWC handed over their donation for flood victims in Jakarta to Mme. Veronica. Following the inauguration, the new Executive Board paid a courtesy call on the Chief Patron and Mme. Nguyen Thanh Huong, spouse of the Secretary-General of ASEAN and Advisor of AWC.
“AWC has added elegance to ASEAN affairs. The AWC’s interests and involvement in many areas visibly supplemented the work of ASEAN. The contributions to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan last year and other novel activities to assist the less-fortunate people in ASEAN showed that the AWC is…caring for our citizens,” said H.E. Dr. AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs. “As outlined in the ASEAN Charter, one of the purposes of ASEAN is to promote a people-oriented ASEAN. In this context, the involvement and outreach activities by the AWC will no doubt be increasingly important,” he added.
Madam Win pledged that during her term as President of AWC, the Executive Board would focus on the wellbeing of the underprivileged children. Moreover, AWC would continue to organise monthly activities to enhance better understanding of each other’s cultures and traditions. After last year’s success, they would expand on the AWC Noodles Festival - a culinary festival that brings noodle cuisine from all over the region.
Furthermore, Mme. Win reaffirmed that the AWC aims to strengthen regional solidarity and promote cooperation among its members through various social and cultural activities including engagement with women organizations such as Women International Club (WIC) and the Spouses of Heads of Mission (SHOM). To ensure the success of the activities, she called on the members of AWC to share their vast experience and cooperation.
