ASEAN to Advance Trade Repository
JAKARTA, 6 May 2014 – A Regional Workshop on ASEAN Trade Repository (ATR)/National Trade Repository (NTR) and Notification Procedures under the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) was held last week in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop provided a forum for the competent authorities from ASEAN Member States to discuss the technical solutions in relation to the functioning of the ATR/NTR and the notification procedure under the ATIGA for the purposes of harmonising the regional disciplines on transparency.
The participants expressed appreciation for the outcomes of the discussion. They recognised the importance of regulatory transparency, which is a fundamental catalyst for economic development, cross-border investment and trade, and ASEAN regional integration. The ATIGA requires that an ATR be established by 2015 and be made accessible to the public through the internet and ASEAN Member States are exerting efforts to meet the target. The outcomes of the workshop will be used as inputs for discussion at the 15th Coordinating Committee on the Implementation of ATIGA Meeting in June.
The workshop was participated in by officials that play a key role in the respective national trade repositories from ASEAN Member States; Mr. Paul Mandl, the Team Leader of ARISE Technical Assistance Programme; Mr. Paolo Vergano, ARISE consultant; and ASEAN Secretariat staff. The workshop was supported by ASEAN Regional Integration Support by the European Union (ARISE) in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat. ARISE is planning to further support ten national workshops and one regional workshop to assist ASEAN on the ATR/NTR establishment as part of its 2nd phase support to ATIGA implementation.
