ASEAN Secretary-General receives credential of Cuban Ambassador to ASEAN

JAKARTA, 25 October 2013 - The Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, received today the Letter of Credence from H.E. Mrs. Enna Viant Valdés as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to ASEAN. During the occasion, SG Minh expressed his congratulation and welcomed Ambassador Valdés as one among the friends of ASEAN.

Secretary-General Minh stressed that Cuba has established good relationship with all ASEAN Member States (AMS) and brought up the idea of both ASEAN and Cuba further exploring potential areas of cooperation such as in the fields of medical care, tourism, agriculture and people-to-people contact. The ASEAN Chief also said that all AMS support the draft UN Resolution to end the economic embargo on Cuba at UN sessions.

In response, Ambassador Valdés thanked the Secretary-General of ASEAN for accepting her Letter of Credence and conveyed the appreciation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba to H.E. Le Luong Minh for accepting Cuba’s accreditation which contributes to further strengthening cooperation between Cuba and ASEAN as well as Cuba and countries in the region. Ambassador Valdés informed Minh that Cuba has opened up its economy and welcomes foreign investment. She urged ASEAN to explore Cuba’s potentials and encouraged investment in Cuba for the mutual benefit of people in both regions. She also agreed with SG Minh to explore further potentials of both ASEAN and Cuba to forge closer cooperation.
