ASEAN Defence Ministers Meet US Secretary of Defense
HONOLULU, 8 April 2014 - ASEAN Defence Ministers and the Secretary-General of ASEAN met with the United States’ Secretary of Defense, Mr. Chuck Hagel, for an informal dialogue in Honolulu, Hawaii on 3 April. They exchanged views on defence and security issues of common concern in the region including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
At the Meeting, the US reaffirmed its strong commitment to work together with ASEAN to tackle global security challenges through the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting-Plus framework. Secretary-General Le Luong Minh, in this regard, proposed ways and means the US could continue to contribute and add value to the existing regional defence security mechanisms.
The informal dialogue was preceded by a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Roundtable held on 2 April 2014. Discussion at the Roundtable focused on civil-military cooperation within a whole-of-government approach during disasters as well as opportunities and challenges in disaster response in the ASEAN region.
ASEAN Defence Ministers and Secretary-General Minh toured the USS Anchorage, an amphibious transport dock, and visited the Joint Pearl Harbor/Hickam Base where there was a static display of military aircrafts.
Secretary-General Minh also had a bilateral meeting with Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations, Ms. Kyung-wha Kang. At the Meeting, Assistant Secretary-General Kang reaffirmed UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' commitment for closer cooperation with ASEAN and discussed with Secretary-General Minh the emerging lessons-learned from Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines in November 2013.
