ASEAN and Japan Friendship Event Features Sumo Demonstration
In an event that symbolizes the strength of ASEAN and Japan friendship and cooperation, the Japan Mission to ASEAN held a Sumo and Japanese food introduction at the ASEAN Secretariat today. Two ranking Sumo wrestlers from Japan battled it out in a makeshift ring at the ASEAN Hall for a demonstration fight. Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) of ASEAN Dr. AKP Mochtan said that “ASEAN-Japan partnership has grown from strength to strength” and that the “Sumo is a fitting symbol of the friendship between ASEAN and Japan.” “Our relationship is strong because of our mutual respect for each other’s strength,” DSG Mochtan reiterated.
The demonstration was graced by H.E. Mr. Kimihiro Ishikane, Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN together with other dignitaries from ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners. Ambassador Ishikane wittingly remarked that they are delighted to introduce Sumo to ASEAN in order to break staple discussions within ASEAN about the 2015 integration for a little while.
Another highlight of the event was the introduction of chanko-nabe, a Japanese food especially prepared for Sumo wrestlers to boost their protein intake. A local Japanese restaurant prepared chanko-nabe and guests were treated to a rare tasting of the special hot-pot dish along with other Japanese food.
The sumo demonstration is part of a series of events commemorating the 40th year of ASEAN-Japan friendship and cooperation. The Sumo and Japanese Food Introduction was organized by the Japan Mission to ASEAN.
