2014 ASEAN-China Cultural Exchange Year Kicks Off in Beijing
BEIJING, 8 April 2014 - The Opening Ceremony of 2014 ASEAN-China Cultural Exchange Year kicked off in Beijing, China yesterday with joint performances from both sides. Held at the Grand Hall Theatre of Tsinghua University, the events were officiated by H.E. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China, and H.E. U Nyan Tun, Vice President of Myanmar. H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Cai Wu, Minister of Culture of China, Deputy Ministers, senior officials from ASEAN Member States and China, and Embassies of all ASEAN Member States in Beijing were also in attendance.
H.E. U Thein Sein, President of Myanmar, the Chair of ASEAN in 2014, and H.E. Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, and H.E. Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, sent their congratulatory messages to the Opening Celebration. These messages can be found here.
Artists from all ASEAN Member States, including young and women representatives of ASEAN in China, jointly performed with Chinese counterparts to showcase the richness, uniqueness and diversity of cultures across ASEAN and China. The Opening Performance featured a mix of musical, dance, and acrobatic numbers from both sides. It was capped by a song performed by all artists from ASEAN and China.
The Opening Ceremony will have other activities such as visits to the Palace Museum and the National Centre of the Performing Arts, meeting with the ASEAN-China Centre, ASEAN-China Fashion Show, and others.
The Opening Ceremony activities will run until 9 April 2014.
