ASEAN Secretary-General to visit typhoon-ravaged communities in Philippines

ASEAN Launches New Website for Promoting and Protecting Competitive Process

JAKARTA, 13 November 2013 - The ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC) launched the AEGC Website (www.aseancompetition.org) at its Twelfth Meeting on 12-13 November 2013 in Cebu, Philippines. Apart from being a platform for the AEGC members to interact and share information, the website serves to support advocacy efforts as a whole in disseminating information on the benefits of competition policy and law and competition-related developments in ASEAN to the public, including information on cases and rulings within ASEAN Member States.

On World Diabetes Day ASEAN calls for healthy lifestyle to reduce risks for diabetes

JAKARTA, 14 November 2013 – In observance of the “World Diabetes Day” today, ASEAN called for a more healthy lifestyle to reduce the risks of diabetes among ASEAN citizens. “Due to the enormous disease burden of diabetes, it is one of the major diseases included under the interventions for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) within ASEAN,” said Dr. Ferdinal Fernando, Head of the Health and Communicable Diseases Division at ASEAN.

Lower Mekong Officials meet to support ASEAN Integration and Regional Cooperation

PHNOM PENH - Senior officials of the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) gathered for a two-day meeting in Siem Reap on 6-7 November 2013 for the 5th Lower Mekong Initiative Regional Working Group Meeting and an informal discussion on the Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM). Delegates deliberated on the outcomes of the last LMI Ministerial Meeting in July 2013 during the ASEAN Regional Forum Ministerial Meetings in Brunei Darussalam and the measures to move forward the various initiatives under the Pillars of Agriculture and Food security, Connectivity, Education, Energy Security, Environment and Water, and Health.

ASEAN offers support to Philippine Government in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan

JAKARTA, 11 November 2013 – In his capacity as ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator, ASEAN Secretary-General H.E. Le Luong Minh contacted the Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs H.E. Albert Del Rosario and informed the latter that he is ready to facilitate ASEAN cooperation and coordination through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre). In a letter sent to Secretary Del Rosario, the ASEAN Secretary-General expressed “great concern and sadness” over the devastation wrought by super typhoon “Haiyan” which slammed central Philippines on Friday.

Making International Brand Protection Easier for ASEAN Businesses

SINGAPORE, 7 November 2013 - Regional brand owners will be one step closer to easier and potentially cheaper international trademark protection, following a series of information dissemination seminars, including for the Philippines and Viet Nam to promote use of the Madrid Protocol. In addition, a training for Madrid Protocol examiners was recently organized jointly with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for Intellectual Property (IP) Officers from ASEAN Member States (AMS) on Madrid regulations and procedures from 4-7 November in Singapore.

ASEAN Secretary-General meets with EU Foreign Affairs Chief

JAKARTA, 5 November 2013 – The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, H.E. Baroness Lady Catherine Ashton paid an official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat and met Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh yesterday. Lady Ashton is also Vice President of the European Commission and this is the first official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat by the highest-level European Union official thus far, reflecting EU’s continued commitment and political will in its relationship with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States.

JAKARTA, 5 November 2013 – The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, H.E. Baroness Lady Catherine Ashton paid an official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat and met Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh yesterday. Lady Ashton is also Vice President of the European Commission and this is the first official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat by the highest-level European Union official thus far, reflecting EU’s continued commitment and political will in its relationship with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States.

 

H.E. Le Luong Minh expressed appreciation to EU’s efforts and concrete collaboration with ASEAN through the past and ongoing cooperation programmes aimed at supporting the ASEAN Community building. These include programmes such as the ASEAN Regional Integration Support from the EU (ARISE) and Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (READI) which are examples of development assistance that can contribute to greater policy coordination and coherence in support of ASEAN's regional integration and community building, in both trade and non-trade areas. Secretary-General Minh also expressed appreciation to the EU Programmes which support the capacity building in trade negotiations for ASEAN Member States as well as the ASEAN Secretariat’s capacity in monitoring regional economic integration and statistics.

 

Further, Secretary-General Minh called for EU’s continued support to ASEAN in pursuing its post-2015 agenda, particularly the ASEAN Connectivity, to further broaden and deepen regional economic integration. They exchanged views on how both sides could align their priorities and cooperation in the long run, particularly in the ASEAN Community’s post 2015 period as well as new developments, requirements and needs in the new stage of ASEAN Community.

 

H.E. Lady Ashton cited the long-standing cooperation and relationships the EU had with ASEAN Member States and ASEAN.  She commended the efforts and achievements made in the ASEAN Community building which had brought tangible benefits to the region and beyond. She said that the economic strength of ASEAN is felt beyond the region. Lady Ashton also reiterated EU’s support for ASEAN Community and expressed optimism that ASEAN-EU Partnership post-2015 will continue to flourish.

 

Secretary-General Minh and Lady Ashton exchanged views on the developments in ASEAN and the EU. They emphasized their respective regional strength and experiences in regional economic integration, lessons and successes that can be shared and learned from each other. These include unique experiences and best practices that the two regional groupings can offer.

 

On this occasion, Lady Aston also visited the new EU Programme Office based at the ASEAN Secretariat. She said that the office reflects a close and effective coordination and cooperation between the two regional groupings.

Senior ASEAN Official speaks at the region’s Supreme Auditors Meeting

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 6 November 2013 – The Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs Dr. AKP Mochtan spoke to the region’s supreme auditors at their General Assembly Meeting being held from 6-7 November in the Bruneian capital. In his remarks before the assembly of the ASEAN Supreme Audit Institutions (ASEANSAI), Mochtan said that the meeting “reflects the continuing commitment and sound progress in promoting good governance within the ASEAN region.”

EU to redouble efforts in strengthening relations with ASEAN

Jakarta, 1 November 2013 - The European Union (EU) will redouble its effort to strengthen relations with ASEAN by stepping up its support to ASEAN Community building, said the new Ambassador of the EU to ASEAN, H.E. Olof Skoog. He presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN at the latter’s office on 31 October.

ASEAN Economic Ministers Conclude Roadshow in China to Enhance Trade and Investment

JAKARTA, 28 October 2013 - A high-level delegation from ASEAN led by the Honourable Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng, Second Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Brunei Darussalam visited China from 22-25 October to further enhance trade and investment relations between the two sides. The delegation comprised of Economic Ministers from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and senior officials from ASEAN Member States. The delegation visited Hong Kong, Chengdu, Shanghai, and Beijing.
