Prime Minister Lee of Singapore Delivers 2007 ASEAN Lecture
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore outlined the key challenges facing ASEAN in his 2007 ASEAN Lecture in Singapore on 7 August 2007. Prime Minister Lee also spoke on the four areas of focus for Singapore’s chairmanship of ASEAN from August 2007 to July 2008, namely: strengthening ASEAN internally; deepening ASEAN’s community building efforts; deepening ASEAN’s engagement of external powers; and focussing on the inter-related issues of energy, environment, climate change and sustainable development during the 13th ASEAN Summit (and related Summits) in Singapore. The full text of the 2007 ASEAN Lecture can be found here.
The ASEAN Lecture is an annual event held in conjunction with ASEAN’s Anniversary on 8 August. It is intended to bring wider attention to long-term strategic issues of vital importance to ASEAN, and to enhance ASEAN’s standing as a catalyst for regional solidarity, cooperation and development.
Each year an eminent person from ASEAN, or one with close connection to ASEAN, is invited by the Secretary-General of ASEAN to deliver the Lecture, dwelling on any subject of his or her choice. The previous four ASEAN Lectures were delivered by H.E. Megawati Soekarnoputri in Jakarta in 2003, H.E. Phan Van Khai in Ha Noi in 2004, H.E. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta in 2005, and H.E. Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Kuala Lumpur in 2006
